increasing cultivation of the grasslands by local farmers has led to restrictions on the use of surface water for irrigation. instead, the farmers have dug wells and are using groundwater. conditions have been dry the past few years, but the area of cultivated land continues to rise, so the pressure on groundwater resources has been intense. consequently, the level of this lake has fallen dramatically.
basically, the entire foreground of this pic used to be under water. off to the right you can see the dunes that used to mark the shoreline.
